February 2023 Focus - Head Movement
For the month of February, we’re concentrating on the importance of head movement. It’s a crucial aspect of boxing that can make a difference at any point in a fight. Keeping your head on the center line makes you an easy target. With head movement, you’ll upset your opponent’s timing, make them miss, and create opportunities.
There are several types of head movement depending on the situation. Slipping helps avoid straight punches while rolling gets you out of the way of power hooks. In some cases, ducking or bobbing avoids a punch while helping you gain an inside advantage when you step into it. Not only does head movement help you avoid punches, but it also helps you stay loose and relaxed. Being relaxed in the ring is vital for conserving energy, especially as the fight continues into the late rounds.
Some of the greatest fighters of all time were known for their head movement. Mike Tyson in his early years was the master of bobbing and weaving under punches from taller heavyweights. Floyd Mayweather excelled at the pull counter, a technique where you pull back from a jab while simultaneously throwing your cross. As for Canelo Alvarez…well, his head movement speaks for itself.
